NOT SKATING WITH LILTUNECHI

I can’t remember the exact year, if I had to guess it was around winter of 2013. Taylor Shirek and I were skating our local indoor spot, at the time it was called DK’s, and the owner gets a call from Lil Wayne’s manager asking if he can rent the park out later that night. The owner then calls me asking if I can help work the session to help keep an eye on things. I was obliged as it was an opportunity to meet and skate with Lil Wayne.

The session was supposed to start at 10pm so me and another employee of the shop were there waiting for him to arrive. He showed up around midnight. He pulls up in 2 huge tinted out black SUV’s with a posse of 4 or 5 others one of which was DJ Scoob Doo and I can’t say for certain but I believed one of them to be Lil Twist. When he walks in, I’m standing behind the counter at this point and he walks up to me and the most awkward handshake of my life happens. I went in for the classic over the thumb to the fingers jawn and he had a claw type formation. He said whats up and asked where the restroom was and I pointed to the door.

They settle in and immediatly go to the upstairs portion of the park, all there was to skate downstairs was a 4′ mini ramp. I remember seconds after he walked in the scent of cannibas filled the air. His body guard then asked us to lock the door and sits with us by the furnace. A few seconds later a member of his group comes down to ask us about playing music. All there was at the time was a shitty speaker connected to the radio. I tell him I could probably go get a stereo from a friend since it was already so late at this point. I end up calling Taylor inquiring about his stereo and go pick him up.

Taylor and I get back to DK’s with the stereo and start hooking it up. Lil Wayne hands me his phone to hook up to the aux chord and says thanks for getting the stereo. I was stoked because I thought we’d be able to skate with him, but that was not the case. After setting that up we’re back downstairs with his body guard. He was super cool. He told us stories about his job and working for other celebrities. Looking back it was the best part of the night.

After a few hours of talking with his body guard and skating the ramp and flatground to pass time we noticed a few funny things. Lil Wayne listened to his music the entire time. Literally just his music. One of his crew came downstairs and asked if Taylor was pro. Another one rolled up an entire pack of swishers on the counter. When we noticed that going down we got stoked and thought he’d be maybe offer to go smoke for staying late and hooking it up with the stereo but nah. We ended up hanging around till he came downstairs and he let us take some pics and signed a few things for us, which was cool.

Overall, it was a cool thing to happen. A bit of a let down, but we understand he doesn’t owe us shit. I can’t imagine what its like being that famous. I did end up finding a blunt roach in the park upstairs, took it home and gave it to my old man.
